The first thing I turned to was another Denon AVR-2312CI with 7 HDMI inputs, 105 watts per channel, Air Play etc for $924 inc tax at local Best Buy. First thing I noticed was how light it was compared to my older Denon. Heavy does not mean better but in amplifiers, the important component is the power transformer and a robust transformer will be heavy. Upon hooking up the 2312, my first listening test was disappointing. Not much better than my former Denon and perhaps not as good. So I returned the 2312 to Best Buy and start my search again. After extensive search, the Onkyo line interested me the most. Initially, I was attracted to TX-NR717 125 watts and 7.2. Then I chanced on to TX-NR818. I told the sales rep I would call back Mon and let him know if I was still interested. I researched the 818 over the weekend-I had no idea it had just been released. It looked like it was what I wanted-I was replacing an older Harmon Kardon AVR 320. So, I call the rep back on Mon morning and order the 818.It showed up 2 days later; box beat up a tad but I opened it in front of the UPS driver and confirmed there was no physical damage to the 818. It sat in the living room for 2 days until I found the time to unpack/set it up. I had read/watched everything I could find on the internet and read the on-CD manual twice. I then connected all the peripherals/speakers and powered it up. I immediately updated the firmware via USB, rebooted and then set the impedance for 4 ohm since 2 of my speakers (AR-9s) are 4 ohm. I have used Onkyo receivers in the past and have been extremely happy with them. This unit is no exception. My theater is about 20x18 and I am using 1 sub. The build quality of the Onkyo 818 is exceptional. The unit is heavy which is always a plus for an amp, (about 20 pounds heavier than the Denon 2113 which it replaced) and the OSD is good although it does not appear as sharp as I think it should on my 115" screen. Setup was relatively straightforward and there are plenty of HDMI inputs which is always a plus. All in all, I believe the sound quality is much better than my previous Onkyo 805 and the Denon 2113.There are some minor issues that I have (none are dealbreakers): 1. Volume knob tension is not consistent 2. If I turn off my Onkyo 818 it will not recognize my Directv H25 receiver until I turn the Directv H25 off then on again 3.
